Frequently asked questions
Answers about Ajo circles, savings goals, payments, security and fees on Tovajo.
What is Tovajo?
Tovajo helps groups of people organise money together. You can run a rotating Ajo circle, save towards a shared goal like a trip or a wedding, or collect contributions for a shared expense. Every member sees the same schedule, who has paid and what is still outstanding.
Does Tovajo hold my money?
Not today. Tovajo currently runs in Tracking Mode: members pay each other or the group's chosen recipient directly (for example by bank transfer), and Tovajo records each payment, who confirmed it and what is still owed.
Wallet and in-app payment features will only be switched on with a properly licensed financial partner. Until then they are not available, and we will never describe them as live.
Who is Tovajo for?
Friends, families, colleagues, cooperatives, market associations and community groups: anyone who already saves or contributes together and wants a clearer, fairer way to keep track.
How does a rotating Ajo circle work on Tovajo?
Every member contributes the same amount on a fixed schedule, and at each payout date one member receives the pot. The order is agreed by all members before the circle starts and is recorded so it cannot be changed silently.
Example: five friends each save ₦1,000 daily. Over a seven-day payout period each pays ₦7,000, so one member receives ₦35,000 each week. After five weeks everyone has paid ₦35,000 and received ₦35,000, provided everyone pays in full.
What happens if someone stops paying?
Tovajo never records unpaid money as received. Missed contributions show up as shortfalls that everyone in the group can see, and the group's agreed rules apply: reminders, a grace period, postponing a payout, paying out only confirmed funds, or pausing the circle.
Tovajo does not cover missed contributions and does not guarantee that other members will pay. In particular, a member who receives an early payout could stop contributing later. Only join circles with people you trust.
Can the payout order change after we start?
Only through the group's change process. Every affected member has to agree, and the change is recorded. Organisers cannot reorder an active circle on their own.
How do shared savings goals work?
Create a goal (say a ₦1,000,000 vacation), invite members and choose how to split it: equally, by agreed custom amounts or percentages, or as open voluntary contributions. Tovajo works out each person's exact share and schedule, and shows the goal's progress using confirmed contributions only.
What if a goal does not divide evenly?
Tovajo splits amounts to the exact kobo and never loses or creates money through rounding. If a total cannot be split perfectly, the extra kobo go to the earliest members in a fixed, published order, and everyone sees their exact amount before they agree to it.
How are contributions confirmed in Tracking Mode?
A member records their payment, optionally with a reference or receipt. An authorised member, such as the group treasurer or the payout recipient, then confirms it. Members cannot confirm their own payments, and a receipt or screenshot is treated as information from the member, not as proof checked by Tovajo.
Can I pay for a friend?
Yes. You can record a contribution you made on behalf of another member, and both of you are shown on the record. If they gave you cash privately, you can add a note saying so, but Tovajo cannot verify private cash handovers.
How do you protect my account?
Passwords are stored hashed, sign-ins are rate limited, and you can turn on authenticator-app two-factor authentication. You can see and sign out your active sessions, and we alert you about new sign-ins. Group members never see your email, phone number, IP address or device details.
How much does Tovajo cost?
Joining groups and basic tracking are free. Paid plans for organisers and cooperatives are being finalised and will be published on the Pricing page before any charges apply. Fees are always shown before you confirm anything.
